Trying To Understand Why We Age

A study out by Knaggs in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology describes a new enzyme found in cells that may contribute to the aging process.  Understanding the aging process is one of the first steps to defeating it.  And, defeating it is a must.  So on down the road a drug or supplement that can turn down or turn off this enzyme.  And in turn slow down the aging process and wrinkles.

So this enzyme is found on the membrane of fibroblast and keratinocyte cells.  These cells are found in the skin.  Fibroblasts make elastin and callogen that form the matrix of the skin.  This is the stuff found between the cells that contribute to the skin looking young.  As we age these substances decrease and wrinkling and fine lines become more present.  And Keratinocytes are the cells that are most prevelanent in the skin.

It was found that a person who has a very active enzyme produces more free radicals and appears older than they really are.  And a person that has a less active enzyme has less free radicals and is younger than their stated age.  Again, if only we had a drug to turn this enzyme down or off.

But what are free radicals?  We need to go way back to high school or college chemistry to think about the atom.  If you remember the atom is made of protons, neutrons and electrons.  The electrons are on the outer part of the atom and have different orbits like the solar system.  These outer orbits or shells as they are called always want to be complete.  When the outer shell is not complete this is a free radical.  This means that the next atom it bumps into it will steal an electron.  Creating a new free radical. And so  and so on.

So those folks that have increased enzyme activity have increased free radicals.  These people look older than their stated age.  The first step in understanding aging and skin care for men.

I Think He Said Oil Can…

So have you ever heard of someone saying that they know someone who put some WD-40 on their aching joints. And, that it most definitely worked.

I did a journal search on WD-40 to see if somebody had actually tried that for arthritis. Now this is really out there, obviously. It’s a lubricant for mechanics. People use it for loosening nuts and bolts and that kind of thing. So if you can loosen nuts and bolts, why couldn’t it loosen up your joints and make everything go a little bit easier.

I saw that going around the internet one time, and the journal search I did on it came up absolutely nothing. Well almost nothing. One very small editorial article came up that a family practice doc commented, “Hey, this is crazy. I had a few people do that. The only thing that happened was they came in with a rash.” You rub the stuff on your joints, on your knees and your elbows, and the next you know, you’re gonna come back with a dermatitis that needs to be fixed. There’s no way that this stuff can penetrate into any articular surface and increase cartilaginous structures, decrease arthritis, in any way.  Now think wrinkles, you’ll follow along.

It is another prime example that Pseudoscience is so prevalent that when you actually throw it out there, “Hey, why don’t you put some WD-40 on your joints?” People will go, “Huh.” They actually stop. They wait in silence. They are thinking, “Hmm, that just might work.”

That, my compadre, is the problemo with all the media stuff out there. So much audio bites. So many leftovers. No true matter. Whether it’s talking about arthritis or skin care. That is the enormous ploblemo. It’s tough to filter through all the propaganda.

“Hey, why don’t you put some grape seed extract in your cream and it will get rid of your wrinkles. And people go, “Huh.” They actually stop. They wait. They are thinking, “Hmm, that just might work.”

“Glowing with Tone and Youth” in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology by John Savin. He writes about the hype and lively tone that takes place with beauty correspondence in the mainstream press, and how they try to make their speech so poetic when it comes to describing the effect of any of products being utilized. Some creams leave you soft and tingly or have a dewy finish or give you a radiant glow.

But have you ever seen a radiant-glow-meter or a dewey-finish-reader? There are no big or little instruments to determine this.

So is this an independent observer making these assessments? Are there fresh and vibrant scientists doing this task?

But on the next end. Let’s suppose that there is an absolute measurable and statistical difference between the two – between two cosmetic treatments. However, independent observers cannot tell any difference between them. Even in a double-blind randomized study. After careful calibration of an instrument and careful measurement of skin tone and turgor. One is statistically better. Yeah!
But no one can tell. Boo!
Is one product really better than the other?

Sometimes, even though you can’t measure it, that tingly, pearly glow comes across. It’s a mystery.
Or, it’s placebo effect and hype.  Tough to say.  Although I would say that if you see someone that is beautiful, they are usually beautiful not because of a cream or gel or wrinkle cream.  They are that way because they are naturally beautiful.  Have you ever seen someone after a face lift or cosmetic procedure that was just okay? (Of course the wrinkles are gone, but…) Yes.  I am a physician and I can honestly say that I have. It’s like data for a supercomputer.  If you put the correct data then you get the correct result.  If it is wrong then you get the wrong result.  Well, if the person is attractive to begin with then the result is going to be that much more.

The dewey finish meter will be off the charts for that individual!

Ever wondered why some things are considered “the best?” What have they got for them to earn that most coveted title? I just know one thing. It is because they have what it takes to be the best. It lies on what they are consisted of. This goes the same for the anti-wrinkle creams found in the market. There are many of them but few are chosen to be labeled as having the best anti-wrinkles formulas.

When choosing an anti-wrinkle product, it is good to make it a habit to check the labels, especially the ingredients, to be sure that what you are buying is worth your money and time. There are many brands out there being advertised and sold but not all of them will satisfy your needs and expectations. Of course, you will rate the satisfaction after you have tried the product, but you can also take extra precaution by knowing what your product contains – what it will make your skin absorb. It is never wrong to look after your skin because, in the first place, the reason why we buy such products is to take care of our skin.

Take a look at some important anti-aging tips.

First, minerals should be present in your anti-wrinkle cream. It has been known for many years now that there are certain minerals that are good for the body. Most of the well-known minerals that are often found in nutritious foods – and even skin care products – are iron, gold, potassium, magnesium, copper, selenium, zinc, etc. These are among the minerals that can do good to your skin. If your anti-wrinkle product has these then you are on the right track.

Essential fatty acids also create wonderful effects to your skin. Aside from its ability to maintain healthy bodily processes, it also prevents the effects of aging such as wrinkles and lines. This is due to their ability to increase the intake of oxygen though the cell membranes. Examples of these essential fatty acids are Omega 3, Omega 9, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid.

Plants and herbs are also very good sources of good anti-aging formulas, that is why they are often used to create skin care products. Aloe Vera can be regarded as the most popular herb used in skin care products. This is mainly because it is composed of Vitamins E and C, and the mineral zinc. It also protects the skin from sunburn because it has a cooling effect. Another one is Sandalwood which is actually a wood from a tree. It can make the skin younger and smoother; it also has cooling properties like Aloe Vera. Another example is Tea Tree Oil. This is known the heal acne, allergies, and prevent skin blemishes – a common skin problem.

Truly, natural ingredients make the best of the best. It is good to stick to these purely safe and chemical-free elements that take care not only of your skin, making it looking young and healthy, but also of the whole physical body.

Aging is a complex process that involves many areas of your body. It’s unlikely that any one product or pill could cure all of the ailments of aging. However, there are things you can do that not only will help you age more slowly but will improve your quality of life. Your best bet for a long and healthy life is to:

1. Eat a varied and healthy diet. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods. Fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium, and vitamins all play a part in keeping your body functioning at its best. Drink lots of fluids to maintain healthy skin and flush out waste. Eating right will help you maintain a healthy weight.

2. Exercise every day. Exercise improves appetite, makes healthy bones, gives you a better emotional outlook and improves digestion and circulation. Exercise makes you stronger and helps you lose weight.

3. Seeking prompt medical care when you’re ill or injured. Listen to your body and take care of any little problems before they become big problems. Get screened for diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

4. Use sunscreen to prevent sunburn. Professionals agree that one of the most significant factors contributing to aging is chronic inflammation of the skin.

5. Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. Smoking has very damaging effects and dramatically increases your risk of getting cancer and heart disease.

6. Manage stress. Stress is a part of everyday life. Develop ways to help you cope and adjust to situations in your life that may cause you stress. The situation isn’t the problem…its how you react to it.

7. Look for ways to improve overall well-being and enthusiasm for life. Be curios and creative which will encourage you to learn new things. You can also use humor and laughter to help you age well and live long.

8. Keep strong relationships. Maintaining close ties to your family and friends are crucial to healthy aging.

9. Don’t let fears and worries dominate your life. A worried mind is not at peace and robs you of zest and energy which you need to maintain youthfulness.

10. Keep cells youthful with antioxidants. Antioxidants are found in a full-range of fruits and vegetables, as well as in some meat, like fish. Although, our bodies produce its own antioxidants, the level of product declines over time because of environmental factors and through the aging process. You can also take anti oxidant supplements or even anti oxidant teas.

Do all you can to be healthy and in doing so you will age slower. If you have any questions about products that claim to slow or reverse aging ask your doctor. He or she can help you sort through the information and get the facts.

Wrinkle Reduction Treatments

wrinkle treatment

When it comes to wrinkle treatment, there are many different things that you’ll need to consider. The most common cosmetic procedures are for lines and wrinkles, because they are such a common problem with an easy solution. Botox and other fillers are used to get the lines and wrinkles reduced so that people can enjoy having smooth skin once again. If you take the time to talk with your doctor, the two of you can work together to determine which treatment options are best for your specific needs. One of the most important things that you need to keep in mind is that Botox and fillers are not the same.

Botox is actually a poison in large quantities. Don’t be alarmed, because the injection that you get is so small that it could never amount to enough to harm you. What it does is paralyzes the muscles in the face, which thereby stops the wrinkles from getting worse and as time goes on they slowly improve. Botox takes 3-7 days to get 90% of the effect, and about 2 weeks to get the full effect. Over time, the injections will need to be repeated to ensure that patients are getting the best results because Botox is not permanent.

Fillers are very different. They are used for lines that are there all the time. Unfortunately, you can not Botox all part of your body because you need to leave some muscles alone to perform. Depending on the wrinkles and lines on your face, there are thin and thick fillers available. There are options for just about everyone, and only you and your doctor can determine what is best for your wrinkle treatment needs. As a wrinkle treatment, fillers will literally serve to fill in the wrinkles. These are things like collagen, which can be used for thinner wrinkles and lines, and juvederm, which is used for thicker wrinkles.

Fillers work immediately and last up to 12 months in some cases. Depending on where your problem spots are, your doctor will recommend different wrinkle treatments for your needs. Taking the time to discuss your particular needs will be much more productive in getting the best results with your wrinkle treatments. Overall, both Botox and fillers are effective tools for wrinkle treatment depending on which types of wrinkles you have.
